New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said the ailing BSP leader Kanshi Ram should be medically examined to ascertain his mental condition.
A bench comprising Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P P Naolekar said that doctors of the department of clinical psychology and neurologists from AIIMS would carry out the examination.
Bishan Kaur, the mother of the veteran BSP leader had filed a petition alleging that her son was kept in illegal custody by BSP supremo Mayawati.
Senior counsel Jaspal Singh appearing for the petitioner alleged that Kanshi Ram was not mentally fit to make any statement about the state of affairs concerning his illegal detention and he should therefore be admitted to the AIIMS and examined by a team of doctors.
The court, however, rejected this plea but directed that a team of doctors from the AIIMS visit Kanshi Ram and medically examine him before submitting their report to the court within five weeks.
