'Don't Make Unnecessary Emotional Arguments': SC Dismisses Link Between Kota Suicides And NEET Results

The Supreme Court clarified on Friday that the student suicides in Kota were not connected to the NEET-UG 2024 results, advising counsel to refrain from “unnecessary emotional arguments.”

During the hearing, a vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta objected to a petitioner’s claim that the suicides were tied to the exam results.

Justice Vikram Nath emphasised that the tragic incidents were unrelated to NEET-UG 2024, urging the counsel to avoid making “unnecessary emotional arguments here”, Live Law reported.

In a significant development amid ongoing controversy over NEET-UG, the Supreme Court requested responses from the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding a plea for a CBI investigation into allegations of a question paper leak and other exam irregularities.

The bench, addressing a PIL filed by Hiten Singh Kashyap, also called for responses from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Bihar government within two weeks. The court stated that the PIL would be considered alongside other pending cases on July 8, when the top court resumes after the summer break.

Previously, on Thursday, the Centre and NTA informed the Supreme Court that they had revoked the grace marks awarded to 1,563 candidates who had taken the NEET-UG exam for MBBS and related courses. These candidates were offered the option of either retaking the exam or forfeiting the compensatory marks granted due to a loss of time during the test.

The NEET-UG examination took place on May 5 across 4,750 centers, with approximately 2.4 million candidates participating. While the results were scheduled for June 14, they were announced early on June 4 due to the expedited completion of answer sheet evaluations.

Allegations of question paper leaks and other irregularities, particularly in states like Bihar, have sparked protests in various cities and led to legal cases in multiple high courts and the Supreme Court.
