Delhi Police Removes Crime Statistics from Website, Ends Practice of Updating City Data Every Quarter
The Delhi Police has, instead, replaced the city crime statistics, which was accessible to the public, with a link to the NCRB data that is updated on a yearly basis

The Delhi Police has removed crime statistics from its official website, bringing an end to the decades-long practice of updating the city data every quarter. Instead, the department has provided a link to NCRB data on its website, senior officials said.

The NCRB data is updated annually while the Delhi Police would refresh its data quarterly. In addition, the national data does not provide data for snatching incidents, which is a major street crime in the national capital.

The move is recent as the department has now decided to stop updating crime data, which was accessible to anyone visiting the official website. A senior officer, on condition of anonymity, said the link to crime statistics for the city has been removed and replaced by the NCRB link.

“This has been done because regularly updating Delhi crime data was becoming a challenge. We share data annually with the NCRB and they publish consolidated all-India crime data every year; this also reflects Delhi,” said the officer, who is aware of the development.

Asked about the data on snatching incidents, which will be missing from the NCRB data, the officer said it will be included once the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) replaces the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and comes into effect.

“Snatching is a major crime in Delhi. It was not included in any of the IPC sections and, therefore, was not recorded as a separate crime. But, under the BNS, there is a separate section and it will be registered as a separate crime with stricter legal action,” the officer said.

Snatching is one of the most common street crimes in Delhi with at least 15 to 20 incidents reported daily. According to the 2019 Delhi Police data, a total of 6,266 snatchings were recorded in the capital that rose to 7,965 in 2020 and to 9,383 in 2021.

When CNN-News18 contacted the Delhi Police for a comment, officials confirmed that the data had been removed but declined to make an official response.
