CHENNAI/MADURAI/TIRUPUR: Confusion prevailed over the status of ties between CPI and DMDK ahead of the local body polls as leaders of the Left party aired divergent views on the matter on Monday. In Chennai, senior CPI leader C Mahendran told Express that the seat adjustment arrangement with the DMDK continued to be intact. “We (will) go together wherever possible,” he said. Asked on places where the party had finalised seat sharing, he said,“Seat sharing for the civic polls is a strenuous process. The details could not be disclosed now.” But there was no signs of camaraderie between the parties in districts like Madurai and Tirupur. CPI leaders in Madurai even made an announcement that the party has snapped its ties with DMDK and released the list of wards it is contesting.CPI District Secretary M N Mayileri told reporters that even though his party had been “pressurising” DMDK for seat sharing talks, the Vijayakanth-led party has not responded.Mayileri said CPI was going it alone due to the “disinterest shown by the DMDK”. Mayileri said CPI will be contesting in wards 2, 3, 4, 12, 17, 19, 41, 46, 54, 57, 68 and 81 in Madurai Corporation. In Tirupur, deadlock continued as DMDK, CPI and CPM fielded the candidates in Corporation wards against each other. Though candidates of DMDK and CPI had filed nominations for Tirupur Mayor post, the Left party has now decided to support DMDK candidate Dinesh Kumar.“Tirupur Corporation had become the major setback for the alliance talks with DMDK and in order ease the situation, I withdrew the nomination following the order of State Committee. However, we are yet to decide to support DMDK in the local body election,” Ravi alias Subramanian, Tirupur District Secretary of CPI, said.
