A team of doctors from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) are sent to Bidar Institute of Medical Science against the backdrop of Medical Council of India (MCI) inspection on Friday. It is now an age old practice in the state to send doctors from one institution to another when the MCI inspections are held. On Wednesday too, senior faculties from BMCRI were told to pack their baggage and be present at the Bidar Institute of Medical Science for the MCI inspection."Except the inadequate senior faculty members, all is well in term of hospital, emergency room, operation theater, hospital canteen and ICU in Bidar institute. And now our presence will fill that gap and hide the shortage of doctors, making the institute ready for inspection", added one of the doctors on the condition of anonymity."Rather than solving the problem of shortage of staff, the state government has made it a custom to send doctors from one place to another. We just have to be physically present to save the institute from derecognition. When the state government can not arrange the sufficient staff strength then why open the new colleges. No senior faculty intends to work in Bidar despite the handsome salary", added another doctor.According to the sources, the government order on the transfers has been sent to the institutes. Doctors from BMCRI including one doctor from preventive social work, one from dental college and a few more from other institutes are expected to join them. From a couple of years, it is a regular practice of the government to send doctors from one institute to another like Shimoga, Raichur, Mandya medical college.Affects Routine Work: Doctors "Who will look after the patients in our absence? asks one of the doctors. Though transferring doctors will help the institute, patients will suffer in our absence", he said."It badly affects the regular routine work. Do they have alternate arrangements for it? Patients who visit the hospital from far flung areas will have bad time till the we report to the duty", he added.Dr O S Siddappa, Dean Director, BMCRI said that last year it was 29 doctors who were sent to different districts during MCI visit and this time it is only five each from Victoria, Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital. Speaking about the alternate arrangement, he said that it will just be five per cent staff deficit that too for a few days.
