Beijing: After China’s lunar probe satellite mission sent back its first images of the moon on Monday.

The pictures were made public at a gala ceremony in Beijing Aerospace Control Center. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called the achievement a major step for China. He unveiled black and white pictures, showing rough surface scattered with big or small pits.

The area covered by the picture, about 460 km in length and 280 km in width, is within a location of 70 to 54 degrees south latitude and 83 to 57 degrees east longitude, PTI quoted the official news agency of China.

"The dark patch in the picture's upper right side shows the surface there is blanketed by basalt, a hard and dense volcanic rock," PTI quotes sources.

Chinese Premier, Wen Jiabao, in a fervent speech said that the age-old dream of China to fly to the moon, had started to become a reality.

This satellite for lunar probe launched last month is expected to survey the entire surface of the moon by early next year. India plans to launch its lunar probe in April next year.
