Beijing: China has shut down an unspecified number of domestic porn and illegal websites in its latest crackdown on Internet porn and piracy.

The national anti-porn and anti-piracy office under the General Administration of Press and Publication said a number of piracy cases, in the provinces of Guangdong, Anhui and Hubei had resulted in the crackdown.

Anhui in east China closed seven websites containing illegal content while 53 websites containing pornographic or violent online games were also shut down.

Three Internet piracy rings have also been broken in central China's Hubei province.

Two people have been accused of setting up a server to run the online game 'World of Legend' and earned up to $125,000, violating the rights of the game's official operator Shanda Interactive Entertainment Limited.

In another case, a man was arrested for operating the game 'Legend 3', violating the copyright of another games creator Guangzhou Optisp. The piracy ring had made $32,500.

The third case involves illegal movie downloading. A person was fined and his servers confiscated after his company was accused of charging visitors for downloading thousands of movies without authorisation from copyright owners.
