Srinagar: In a massive security breach a Tata Sumo laden with explosives was blown up by militants at the Old Airport premises, which also houses the headquarters of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) Regiment.

The driver had got out of the car to fill his credentials in a log book when the vehicle exploded.

The driver has been arrested and is being interrogated.

On interrogation the driver revealed that a man had hitched a ride with him.

The man had two boxes of apples which he left behind while getting off the car.

The vehicle’s entry into one of the most secured defence installations in the state has raised questions regarding the security arrangements at such places.

The old airfield is used by the defence forces and VVIPs. The premise also houses a large number of barracks for families of the Indian Army.

The Army and the Air Force top brass are investigating the security breach.

Meanwhile, checking and frisking operations have been intensified in all parts of Srinagar after the explosion.
