BJP slams UPA over Assam violence

The BJP on Sunday slammed the UPA government for ignoring the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration in Assam, which it termed, was the primary reason for the violence that ripped the State last week.

The party said the Centre should work for  an all-party consensus in the matter of “infiltration” and devise a strategy for deporting illegal immigrants from Bangladesh out of Indian territory.

BJP national spokesperson Tarun Vijay said the Bodo tribe had been subjected to “atrocious violence” by infiltrators from across the border in Bangladesh.

He claimed over 400 Bodo villages in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) had been victims of the violence perpetuated by  “foreigners,” including the alleged burning down of a Brahma Temple that the tribals considered sacred.

He said Singh failed to utter even a word of sympathy to the Bodos and did not underline the real cause behind the violence. “The Congress party is playing vote-bank politics in the issue,” he said. The Rajya Sabha MP charged that Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi failed to elicit timely response from the administration.

“We demand that a special financial package be extended to Bodos. The UPA must work for  an all-party consensus to get rid of Bangladeshi infiltration,” he said. On Congress MP Vijay Darda calling Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi a “tiger”, he said if the truth had been accepted by a Congress MP, “it has to be welcomed.”
