Mumbai: Amitabh Bachchan was operated for an intestinal infection in Lilavati hospital on Wednesday evening.
The nearly three-hour long operation, which was conducted following infection, inflammation and perforation in Bachchan's intestine was declared successful.
During the operation, a team of surgeons removed some of the old tissues which were the remnants of the injury the actor had sustained during the shooting of film Coolie in 1982.
However, rumours connecting Bachchan's present ailment to the injury he suffered in 1982 while shooting for the film Coolie have been declared baseless.
He was operated on by gastro intestine surgeon, Dr P Jagganath of Leelavati Hospital.
Friends and family are staying close to him and not speaking to the media.
It has been learnt that the actor who was shifted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) shortly after the surgery, has been advised rest till the end of December.
Bachchan had been diagnosed with colitis which is a disease that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the lining of the large intestine.
The inflammation usually occurs in the rectum and lower part of the colon, but it may affect the entire colon also.
Bachchan was admitted to Lilavati Hospital on Monday, complaining of abdominal pain.
The 63-year-old actor has undergone various tests since Monday when he was flown in from Escorts Hospital in New Delhi.
Earlier in the day, doctors at the Lilavati Hospital had announced that Bachchan was recovering and there was no cause of worry.

In 1982, during the filming of Coolie, Bachchan had had a near-fatal accident on the sets of the film. He was hurt in the abdomen during a fight sequence with actor Puneet Issar.
Bachchan had been hospitalised for six months following the accident.
The popular interest in his injury was so high that when Coolie was released, it featured a freeze-frame and caption, isolating the exact instant when Amitabh was injured.
The abdominal pain this time around is also on the same side where he was injured while filming for Coolie. Though docters have said that the infection has got nothing to do with his previous injury.
As soon as Bachchan was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital, members of the film fraternity started pouring in.
Bollywood actors Priyanka Chopra and Ritesh Deshmukh, Abhishek's co-stars in his forthcoming movie Bluffmaster, were the first to arrive.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, actors Sanjay Dutt, Danny Dengzongpa, producer Smita Thackeray, Romesh Sharma, Manoj Desai, Ramesh Sippy, family friends Parmeshwar Godrej, Gauri Kahn and Jayaprada made their way through the crowded hospital lobby to his room.
