Visakhapatnam: The Maoists abducted a tribal youth and ransacked four shanties in Gobarapada village in Munchingput mandal in the Agency area of the district late last night, police said.

The youth was identified as Ramana. A group of armed Maoists surrounded his house yesterday and took him away accusing him of being a police informer. They also abducted two other youths, who were beaten up and later released.

A Maoist had been killed in an encounter with police near the same village on June 20 this year and rebels believed that there were some informers in the area, police said.

District superintendent of police Koya Praveen said that teams of Greyhounds, the special anti-Maoist squad, were combing the area. The Maoists are observing `martyrs fortnight' from July 20 to honour their fallen comrades
