Thiruvananthapuram: As capital, Thiruvananthapuram should set an example for other districts, you might say. But there are also instances when the top position can be embarrassing. For example, between January 1 and June 30 this year - a matter of just 181 days - a staggering 6,665 cases were registered in the State’s police stations for crimes against women, and Thiruvananthapuram district accounted for 890 of them, topping the list.
The data was submitted by Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan in the Assembly on Wednesday in reply to a question by CPI’s Mullakkara Ratnakaran. Thiruvananthapuram was followed by Thrissur (756 cases), Kollam (683), Kozhikode (565) and Ernakulam (509).
Among the police districts, Thiruvananthapuram Rural topped with 648 cases. And among the city units, Kozhikode city headed the list with 243 cases, and Ernakulam City was last with 196 cases. During the said period, the Railways also registered 32 cases for crimes against women.
The Minister did not provide a break-up of the types of crimes, though. To a related question, he said that as of now, the Government had no plans to increase the number of women’s police stations.
