To enhance computer literacy in villages, govt launched its e-gram scheme that has linked over 500 villages in Gujarat.

Ahmedabad: A village in India mired in dire poverty is nothing unusual.

But if the same village manages to bridge the digital divide and the whole gram panchayat becomes computer savvy it is bound to become the centre of attraction.

This is just what has happened in remote Juna Chamu village in Himmatnagar district of North Gujarat where its sarpanch managed to bridge the digital divide between the urban and rural by ushering in the information technology revolution to the doorstep of his village.

Gunavant Barot is the village sarpanch who has brought a turnaround in the village.

"I understood the importance of the computer and decided to bring a change in gram panchayat administration using this technology," he said.

Out of more than 500 villages in the state that have been up linked under the e-gram scheme, only Juna Chamu gram panchyat has the distinction of being totally computerised, said Anand Barot, a senior official of Gujarat Informatics Limited.

Gujarat Informatics Limited is the nodal agency of the state government covering the e-gram scheme in Gujarat villages.

With the first gram panchyat in the country to have its own website, the government is planning to make this a model e-gram panchyat not only for Gujarat but also for the country, said the officials.

Intel has also given recognition to the village as the best governed e-gram (village) panchayat of the country and donated four computers to the village to carry forward the work told the government officials.
