11 lose vision, 20 admitted following eye surgery
The private hospital conducted cataract operations on over 30 people last week.

Nellore (Andhra Pradesh): A botched surgery at a 'free eye camp' organised by a private corporate hospital here early last week resulted in loss of vision in 11 people and hospitalisation of 20 others with eye infection.

The Bolineni hospital here had, on October 19, organised a 'free eye camp' and conducted surgeries on the fateful day.

On October 20, at least six cases complained of 'bleeding and oozing of water and pus' and brought this to the notice of the hospital authorities.

They were later shifted to a leading corporate eye hospital in Chennai where five out of the six had reportedly lost vision because of infection.

A total of 11 people have lost their vision due to the infection.

Reports said 20 others were under treatment at Shanker Netralayam at Chennai for treatment of 'eye infection' in the wake of the free camp.

Hospital sources suggested that the ''infection could have been from the eye drops and chemicals and not by the surgery.

Sources also said the hospital management had come forward to pay the costs of the treatment at Shanker Netralayam.

Even as investigation was on, expert opthamalagists from Health Directorate were expected to reach here later this week to look into entire episode.
