Fire Department officials received a call at 1:23 pm and 6 fire tenders were pressed into service to control the blaze.
"Six fire engines took three hours to douse the fire that began around 1.20 pm in the basement of the three-storey building. The fire later engulfed the whole building," Deputy Commissioner of Police Romil Baaniya said.
The badly-charred body of Ratan Singh, 80, was recovered from the building in Sunlight Colony near Ashram Chowk and taken to Trauma Centre by PCR. Singh was dealing in supply of tents for weddings and working as a tailor at the shop.
Prima facie, an electrical short circuit caused the fire, police said.
