What does “doe eyes” mean?

“Doe eyes” refer to large and innocent-looking eyes. “Doe eyes” or “doe-eyed” is a way to describe someone who has large, round, and clear wide eyes, which makes them seem naive, childlike, and sweet. The word comes from the appearance of a doe’s (female deer) eyes, which are large and framed by thick lashes, giving them a gentle appearance. Is “doe eyes” a compliment?

Yes, having doe eyes is usually seen as a compliment. In many places and cultures, people consider large, wide eyes as a sign of attractiveness. So, it’s likely a compliment if someone says you have doe eyes. People with large eyes are often viewed as youthful, open, kind, and expressive—all of which are attractive and flattering traits! This doesn’t mean people with smaller eyes aren’t attractive, though! Lots of people find smaller eyes a desirable trait, too. What is the doe eye makeup trend on TikTok?

The doe eye makeup trend helps your eyes appear larger and brighter. The doe-eyed makeup trend first blew up on TikTok in 2022. The look uses light, neutral eyeshadows, eyeliner, and lots of mascara to make your eyes appear wider, rounder, and brighter. Ultimately, the goal is to give you a sweet, innocent, and doll-like look. As a bonus, doe-eyed makeup also helps you look more awake. Doe eye makeup looks great on all eye shapes, from round to almond-shaped to downturned!

Brush a light, neutral eyeshadow all over your lids. Get out your favorite neutral eyeshadow palette and select a cream or brown shadow that's 1 to 2 shades lighter than your skin tone. Then, use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to sweep the shadow all over your eyelid, from the inner corner to the outer corner and up to your brow bone. Buzas agrees that “lighter eyeshadow colors” help make your eyes appear larger and wider. Tip: Apply an eyeshadow primer on your eyelids before you add shadow. Primers help your eyeshadow last all day long.

Blend a darker neutral eyeshadow into your crease. Add a small amount of cream or brown eyeshadow that’s several shades darker than your skin tone to a small eyeshadow brush. Then, apply the color along the crease of your eyelid, sweeping it on in a curved motion from the outer edge of your eye to about halfway down your lid. Keep sweeping the brush back and forth (without applying more shadow) until the shadow is well blended into your lid color and there are no harsh lines.

Apply a white or very light eyeshadow to your inner corner. Apply a small amount of a light neutral or white eyeshadow to a small eyeshadow brush. Or, dab your pinky finger into the shadow. Then, press the color into the inner corner of your eye. Feel free to use a matte or shimmery shade for your highlight. Highlighting the inner corner of your eye helps your eyes appear bigger and brighter while making you look more awake. Optional step: Sweep the light shade underneath the arch of your brow. This helps lift your eyes, making your eyes look wider and brighter.

Use liquid eyeliner to thinly line your upper lash line. Grab a black or brown liquid eyeliner, depending on your preference. Then, place the liner at the very tip of your inner corner. Simply drag the liner right next to your upper lash line in small sections until you reach the outer corner of your eye. Feel free to flick out the outer corner of the eyeliner into a subtle wing. Just don’t drag the liner far past your outer corner, as this elongates your eye instead of making it look larger. Use a gel eyeliner, if you prefer.

Apply dark brown eyeshadow to your bottom lash line. Sweep an eyeliner brush through a dark brown eyeshadow or the shade you used on your crease. Then, drag the brush along your bottom lash line, starting at the outer corner and ending about ¾ down your lid. Go over the shadow with a fluffy brush to blend and soften the line. Using eyeshadow instead of eyeliner helps you achieve a softer look, which suits the doe-eyed vibe better.

Line your lower waterline with a nude or white eyeliner pencil. D'Angelo says that adding “a nude eyeliner” or white eyeliner “on the bottom waterline will give the eyes a doll-like appearance.” Simply use your finger to gently pull down your bottom eyelid. Then, run the eyeliner along your waterline from the inner to outer corner.

Curl your eyelashes and add 1 to 2 coats of mascara. According to D'Angelo, “curling your eyelashes” can “immediately make the eyes appear larger.” Once you’ve curled your lashes, she says that a few “coats of mascara will open the eyes up” even more. Simply swipe on a curling or volumizing mascara, dragging it from the edge of your lash line up to the tips of your lashes. Apply a pair of false lashes with longer lashes in the center to help open up your eyes even more.

Use an eyebrow pencil to fill in and define your eyebrows. Defining your brows can help your eyes appear larger and more open. Simply grab an eyebrow pencil in the same shade as your brows. Then, use short and quick strokes to fill in your brows, following the shape of your eyebrows. Tip: Set your makeup with a setting spray once you’ve done your brows and applied your foundation and blush. Setting spray helps your makeup stay in place all day long.

Doe Eye vs Siren Eye Makeup

Doe eyes open up your eyes while siren eyes elongate them. Siren eyes are another popular makeup trend, which gives you a sultry and seductive look instead of the innocent and cutesy look of doe eyes. You use eyeliner to outline the inner corner of your eye and draw a dramatic wing along the outer corner. This helps to elongate and narrow your eyes. Siren eyes are named after the mythical creatures, which are known for luring sailors to their deaths with their beautiful looks and enchanting voices. So, it’s no surprise that the makeup look has a more dramatic and sultry vibe than the sweet doe-eyed look.
