Madrid: Real Madrid have announced ambitious plans to construct a spectacular $1 billion (£631m) island resort in the United Arab Emirates.

Strategically located within four hours of around two billion of the world's population, the resort is an hour's drive away from one of the busiest parts of the planet, with 50 million people travelling through the area each year.

The project, called Real Madrid Resort Island, will boast a host of features, such as 60 luxury bungalows, a 450-room five-star hotel, a marina, complete with a yacht club, and a theme park.

The complex will also house groundbreaking technology, including the first-ever stadium with one side open to the sea, and a holographic football show.

With a date of completion set for January 2015, this will strengthen Los Blancos' position in Asia in time for the 2022 World Cup, which will be held in nearby Qatar.
