Domestic star Sarfaraz Khan came up with a brilliant knock in the intra-squad in Pretoria on Friday. The Indian Test squad is gearing up for the 2-match series against South Africa, starting December 26 in Centurion. As a part of their preparations, the players were divided into two different teams – India and India A – and engaged in an intra-squad practice game.
Playing for India, Sarfaraz smashed a 61-ball hundred in the game. The right-hand batter launched an outright attack against the likes of Harshit Rana, Saurabh Kumar and veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to notch triple figures of just 63 deliveries.
Sarfaraz’s younger brother, Musheer, shared the video of the Mumbai batter’s inning on Instagram.
“India Intersquard Match Sarfaraz Khan Scored 100 runs in 63 balls at South Africa,” the caption of the video read.
Sarfaraz made a strong case for his maiden Test call-up. Several media reports have claimed that opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad will no longer be a part of the 2 Tests as he won’t be able to recover from the finger injury on time. The Maharashtra batter hurt himself in the second ODI against South African in Gqeberha which kept him away from the action in the decider in Paarl.
Though the BCCI is yet to make an official announcement, the board may consider Sarfaraz as Ruturaj’s replacement in the 2-match series.
Sarfaraz has been banging at the selectors’ door for quite a long time now. Despite accumulating 3657 runs in 41 matches and averaging 71.70, he is yet to receive an India call-up.
Sarfaraz goes unsold in IPL 2024 auction
Once considered a prodigy in the cash-rich tournament, Sarfaraz has failed to attract a buyer in the IPL 2024 auction, held in Dubai last week. He had an underwhelming outing last season, scoring just 53 runs in 4 matches. Listed at a base price of INR 20 lakh, he could not attract any bids during the event.
Sarfaraz made his IPL debut for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2015. He has played 50 games so far and has amassed 585 runs, including a half-century.
