Former Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour has reserved big praise for young Indian batter Shubman Gill and said that he can become Indian captain in all three formats of the game in the future. Gill, who made his international debut for India against New Zealand in January 2019, has been an integral part of the Indian team in all three formats of the game for quite some time. He was appointed as India’s captain for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe earlier this month, and under his leadership, the Men in Blue got the better of the Sikandar Raza-led side by a margin of 4-1.
The 24-year-old right-handed batter was also recently announced as India’s new vice captain in ODIs and T20Is for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, which starts on July 27.
Impressed by Gill’s body language, Rathour feels the star batter will become a good leader.
“Whatever I have seen of him, be it for the Gujarat Titans or in Zimbabwe (when Gill led in a T20 series), he did a good job. He has shown terrific body language, which is a must if you are leading a side. Now with the vice-captaincy, the BCCI has given him extra responsibility, and I am sure he will thrive in this role,” Rathour was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
“Although he is not yet the captain, being in the leadership group will bring the best out of him as well. When you are in that role, leading others, it gives you that extra bit of responsibility, which is good and I think is great for a young kid like Shubman, who one day might lead India in all three formats,” he added.
Gill has led India A teams in the past and was appointed as Gujarat Titans captain ahead of Rashid Khan and Kane Williamson for the 2024 edition of the IPL as well. However, in his maiden season as captain, he failed to help GT qualify for the third straight IPL final, and with five wins in 14 matches, the Ahmedabad-based franchise could only manage to finish in 8th position.
