The West Indies cricket team established their supremacy by winning their second consecutive ODI World Cup trophy 46 years back on this day. Having won the inaugural edition of the tournament at the iconic Lord’s in 1975, the Caribbean side was the favourites to win back-to-back two crowns four years later.
With Sir Clive Lloyd handling the leadership duties, the West Indies faced England in the 1979 ODI World Cup final in London on June 23. Sir Viv Richards put on a batting masterclass to light up the sport’s ultimate game. He produced one of the finest individual displays in ODI history to help the West Indies seal the trophy once again.

West Indies Claim the World Cup
Batting first, the West Indies posted a solid total of 286. West Indies batting was spearheaded by star batter Sir Vivian Richards. West Indies’ opening pair of Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes departed early. Greenidge was dismissed for nine while, Haynes lost his wicket to Chris Old.
Seeing West Indies in early danger, Richards took it upon himself to anchor the innings by racking up a monumental century.
Collis King also played a crucial knock by following a different approach. While his teammate Sir Viv Richards calmly collected boundaries, King was on the offense right from the get-go. He smashed a 66-ball 86 while hitting 10 boundaries and three sixes. He was dismissed by Phil Edmonds but it was too late for the Englishmen.
In the second innings, England began their run chase in a methodical and controlled manner. They did not lose a single wicket until the 129-run mark. England, however, were slowly running out of deliveries to reach the target.
England skipper Mike Brearley was the first batter to depart for his side, losing his wicket to Michael Holding. The West Indies pacer added another soon, dismissing Geoff Boycott for 57.
The Caribbean duo of Colin Croft and Joel Garner joined the action to scalp the remaining eight wickets. Garner picked five of them to bowl out England for 194, sealing a 92-run victory for West Indies.
Michael Holding contributed significantly by picking up two wickets in the 1979 World Cup final against England.
