Suryakumar Yadav seems to have become a giant in T20 cricket. The Indian middle-order batter has been named the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year for the second consecutive time. The feat serves as a testament to Surya’s persistent dominance in the shortest format of the game.

Upon receiving the coveted award, the right-handed batter was congratulated by his Indian Premier League (IPL) side, Mumbai Indians. The franchise dropped a picture of Surya with the accolade on Instagram. He was captured posing with the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award, donning India’s T20 World Cup kit.

“Pose toh aise kar rahe hai jaise ICC Men’s T20I Player of the Year ho (Posing like the ICC Men’s T20I Player of the Year), read the caption of the post. Surya also shared the same photograph from his handle. Expressing gratitude for the prestigious award, the cricketer wrote in the caption, “Grateful.”

Suryakumar Yadav flew off to the USA after wrapping up his IPL campaign with Mumbai Indians. He is currently in New York where the Indian team has been preparing for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Surya missed the first few games of the 2024 IPL because of injuries.

Once recovered, Surya retained his place in the playing eleven of Mumbai Indians. He made eleven appearances in the franchise competition this season, accumulating 345 runs including a 51-ball unbeaten century and three fifty-plus scores. He has recorded an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of over 165.

Securing the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award just ahead of the World Cup will certainly boost the confidence of Suryakukar Yadav. He will carry the Indian middle-order at the showpiece event along with Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya.

Since being introduced in India’s T20I set-up, Surya has represented the country in 60 matches in the shortest format. He has racked up a total of 2141 runs at an exceptional strike rate of 171.55. The 33-year-old has slammed 17 half-centuries and breached the 100-run mark four times during his T20I career.

In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Surya has served as an interim captain in several bilateral T20I series, with his last assignment coming against South Africa in December last year. Surya will be seen in action in the Blue jersey when India take on Bangladesh for a T20 World Cup warm-up game on June 1.
