The upcoming tour of Sri Lanka marks the beginning of the Gautam Gambhir-era in Indian cricket. The former opening batter succeeded Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach and will begin his stint with the 3-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, starting July 27 in Pallekele.
Gambhir does not have prior coaching experience but he had successful stints as a mentor with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and then Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While most people from the cricket fraternity have lauded BCCI’s move, former Pakistan bowler Tanveer Ahmed feels Gambhir doesn’t deserve to be India’s head coach.
Taking to his social media handles, Tanveer took a dig at Gambhir’s appointment, calling it a ‘Parchi Case’ which means getting the job via sources or connections.
“VVS Laxman ko indian team ka head caoch hona chahiye tha kyun k woh india B k sath kafi time say head coach kam kar raha ha lagta ha Gautham Gambhir parchi par aya ha (VVS Laxman should have been made the head coach of the Indian team. He has been with the India B team as a coach for a long time. Gautam Gambhir’s appointment seems to be a ‘parchi’ case.),” said the former cricketer who played 5 Tests, 2 ODIs and a T20I for Pakistan.

Why VVS Laxman’s context?
Laxman had toured with the second-string Indian sides as the head coach when Dravid was busy on other assignments with the senior team or was given a break. Laxman was the coach when India won the gold medal at last year’s Asian Games.
He recently toured to Zimbabwe with Shubman Gill & Co where the boys in blur defeated Zimbabwe 4-1 in T20Is. He was also with the Indian T20I team that defeated Australia 4-1 at home right after the 2023 ODI World Cup.
