As Rajasthan Royals completed a comfortable win over Mumbai Indians and the commentators were busy praising the inaugural IPL champions for their impressive start, Gerald Coetzee had quietly broken the record for the fastest delivery of the season by sending down a 157.4 kph thunderbolt to Riyan Parag.
The third delivery of the 16th over, bowled by Coetzee off which Parag hit the winning boundary in chase of 126, was clocked 157.4 kph by the speed gun and with that Coetzee overtook the earlier record set by Mayank Yadav of Lucknow Super Giants who had made a fast and furious IPL debut against Punjab Kings to pick up three wickets in a player-of-the-match award winning performance.
Mayank was clocked in the 150 kphs as many as three times with 155.8 kph being the quickest of them all as he set the record for the quickest delivery of IPL 2024. However, a day later, MI’s Coetzee replaced him at the top of this list.
Overall, this is the second fastest delivery in the history of IPL after Shaun Tait who had bowled a delivery that was clocked at 157.71 kph in 2011.
Coetzee has replaced New Zealand quick Lockie Ferguson at the second spot who now is third fastest with 157.3 kph delivery to his name. The fourth spot belongs to India’s Umran Malik (157 kph during IPL 2022) and is the quickest Indian in this list.

However, the MI vs RR contest was a forgettable one for Coetzee as he leaked 36 runs in just 2.3 overs while remaining wicketless. Along with fellow South African Kwena Maphaka, he was among the two most expensive MI bowlers of the game as RR completed an easy six-wicket win to go top of IPL 2024 points table.
