'Bowlers Need to do Their Homework': Nicholas Pooran and Sandeep Sharma in Favour of New Short-ball Rule for IPL 2024
There has been a positive reaction to the new rule of having two short balls in an over with both Sandeep Sharma and Nicholas Pooran giving their approvals.

The new rule of two bouncers per over, added to the current edition of the Indian Premer League has received a positive response from some of the players. Among those two are Rajasthan Royals’ pacer, Sandeep Sharma along with the Lucknow Super Giants batter Nicholas Pooran.

With the new addition, it will provide the quick bowlers with something extra to work with in terms of their variations to keep the opposing batters at bay.

Sandeep has managed to take some advantage of this as he managed to produce a fine performance. Asked to bowl from the middle stages of the innings, he was a crucial cog in RR’s victory in the opening fixture against LSG at Jaipur.

Speaking after the match Sandeep shared his approval of the rule. He said,” The bowlers have got some help with it. Earlier, the batters were able to predict where the bowler would bowl if he had used his one-odd bouncer already. It would be easier for the batters to predict the bowling”.

He believes that the new rule will give the batters something more to think about as they look to take on the bowlers which will be favourable for the bowling side. He added,” But with two bouncers, the batters are also in two minds that there is still one bouncer left for the bowler to use”.

The right-arm pacer also made a technical note of how the additional short delivery can be a benefit for the quick bowlers. “Talking about the (batter’s) body weight, even if you have not executed it and the body weight has not yet been transferred, the bowler can still be on the safer side. Hence this rule is beneficial”.

The IPL veteran revealed that he had worked on his variations as he was aware that his chances with the fresh new ball would be limited. At one point when he played for the Punjab Kings earlier, he used to be a big threat with the new ball

“When I came into this team, I knew that I would get less opportunity with the new ball. I practised a lot in nets on my slower bouncer, yorkers and death bowling,” he said.

Despite the loss, LSG batter Nicholas Pooran also gave his approval on the mandate. He said,” It’s a good rule. Especially when a guy now comes into bat, it’s effective. If someone doesn’t like the short ball, you can pepper him with a couple of short balls”.

But Pooran also insisted that preparation is key for both batting and bowling units to execute their plans by taking into account the new change brought within the league. He added, “But in saying that, we as players and bowlers need to do our homework as well. Some batsmen, they like the short ball as well. There’s a short side, and (then) there’s a big side”.

In their next fixture, RR will take on the Delhi Capitals in Jaipur while LSG will take on the Punjab Kings at their home ground in Lucknow.
