The temple has an interesting story of its inception. According to legends, Lord Vishnu manifested on the earth to bless the devotees during the age of Kali. Once, Sage Brighu wanted to test who amongst the Holy Trinity (Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva) is the greatest. When he approached Vaikuntha and kicked Lord Vishnu in the chest, Goddess Lakshmi who resided in his heart felt insulted and came down to earth as a family member of King Padmavati. Lord Vishnu came down to earth and started meditating.
As per the mythology, Venkateshwara and Padmavati met and the god approached the king with a marriage proposal. It is said that the God of wealth, Kuber, gave him a huge amount of money to get married in a grand ceremony. Following the marriage, Lord Vishnu stayed on the hills of Tirumala and a magnificent temple rose in the place.
