The rupee had lost eight paise to close at 61.62 against the dollar in Monday's trade.
Mumbai: The rupee rose by 17 paise to 61.45 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on increased selling of the American currency by exporters amid sustained foreign capital inflows.
Forex dealers said a higher opening in the domestic equity market also supported the rupee. The rupee had lost eight paise to close at 61.62 against the dollar in Monday's trade.
Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE index Sensex rose by 61.95 points, or 0.29 per cent, to 21,267 in early trade today.
