Mkts lose steam, trading flat on weak global cues
Cues from the global markets are not very encouraging for Tuesday.

New Delhi: The markets were trading flat on Tuesday after after fast runup on Monday. Cues from the global markets were not very encouraging and it also witnessed volatility in the early trade. The market breadth was positive, but not very impressive with nearly 600 stocks on the advancing side and about 480 stocks on the decline side on NSE.

At 1031 hrs IST, the Sensex was up 27.35 points or 0.14 per cent at 19086.02, and the Nifty up 21.65 points or 0.38 per cent at 5692.05. About 1649 shares have advanced, 1303 shares declined, and 95 shares are unchanged.

BSE Midcap and Smallcap have outperformed the Sensex. BSE Midacap was up 0.77 per cent at 7775.26 and Smallcap was up 9381.48. BSE pharma, auto and IT stocks have been trading under pressure since opening on Tuesday, however realty, banking and metal stocks were drawing attention. Rupee was quoting at 39.36 against a dollar.

Top gainers on the Nifty are Reliance Energy at Rs 1,942.05 up 5.29 per cent, Reliance Comm at Rs 776.50 up 3.21 per cent and Siemens at Rs 1,547.10 up 2.12 per cent.

Top losers on the Nifty are Infosys at Rs 1,876.70 down 2.65 per cent, Sun Pharma at Rs 972.10 down 2.1 per cent and GlaxoSmithKline at Rs 1,100.05 down 1.37 per cent.

Most active shares on BSE are Reliance Energy at Rs 1,948.95 with 698,831 shares, Reliance at Rs 2,676.70 with 245,382 shares and Rel Capital at Rs 1,940 with 261,809 shares. Most active shares on NSE are Reliance Energy at Rs 1,942.05 with 2,131,359 shares, Reliance at Rs 2,676 with 1,104,423 shares and Reliance Comm at Rs 776.50 with 2,569,218 shares.

Earlier in the morning, the markets opened on a flat note on the back of weak cues from the global markets. Capital goods, power and IT stocks were strong in the opening trade, however metal, pharma and auto stocks were down.

At 9:56 am, Sensex was up 44 points at 19102 and Nifty was up 19 points at 5689. Major gainers were SAIL, Rel Petroleum, TCS, Tata Motors, ONGC, Ranbaxy, Tata Power, Rel Energy, GAIL and VSNL. Sterlite Industries, Bajaj Auto and Hero Honda opened weak today.

Asian markets were trading mixed. Japan's Nikkei plunged 1.01 per cent or 175.79 points at 17,182.36, Singapore's Straits Times declined 0.42 per cent or 16.41 points at 3,845.61. However, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.54 per cent or 159.89 points at 29,700.67, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted advanced 0.93 per cent or 88.85 points at 9,607.30 and South Korea's Seoul Composite was up 0.14 per cent or 2.85 points at 2,038.24.

US stocks end lower as oil hits USD 86/bl. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 108.28 points, or 0.77 per cent, to 13,984.80. The S&P 500 Index fell 13.09 points, or 0.84 per cent, to 1,548.71. The Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 25.63 points, or 0.91 per cent , to 2,780.05.
